Video Poker Tips

For those of you who are into video poker, I have a few strategies for you. You might think you know everything there is to know about video poker, but some of you might be mistaken.

Let’s first discuss the Do’s of playing video poker. You’ll want to pay extra attention to these suggestions, because these tips will help you win more.

1) Take some time and shop the paytables. This is the only game where the payout is spoken for ahead of time. If the exact number is not given out, then a good estimate will be displayed. Learn to tell the difference between a good paytable and a bad one. Most of the time these numbers will be displayed on a big screen. As I said, shop around and see which ones are best. If you are not ready to venture into a casino and try it, try things online first. Get your feet wet with some online video poker. You’ll know when the time is right to venture to an actual casino.

2) In video poker you will want to bet the max. This is one of the few games where betting the max will only serve to benefit you. Want your royal flush or jackpots to make a difference? Try the 5 coin bets. This is where the big money will really pay off.

If you can’t afford to do this, pick a game which has a lower amount. Take that lower amount and bet the highest you can. Here is a good example of what I’m talking about. Don’t play the dollar machines one at a time. This is a waste of time and money. Go for a quarter game and put down $1.25 per game. You’ll get the most amount out of your game and your money. This will allow you to play longer and get better comps. This is what you want anyway, right? Use this strategy and it should work for you.

3) Never put down more money then you have. I know this goes without saying, but you’d be surprised. There are a lot of people who don’t bet wisely, nor do they watch their budget. Than they complain later how much money they are in hole for. Don’t let this happen to you.

You should also set a limit for your winnings. This is another problem which many people tend to have. They win a big amount, then they decide to play the big hero. They decide to stay on. They figure nothing will touch them. This is the wrong attitude to take. You will end up losing almost all the money you won, and then some. Take it from me, quit while you are ahead. Once you get up to a set winning amount, walk away. Never double up. Never chase the money. This is a sure fire way to go into debt and fast.

4)Watch what you drink and how much, even if you are just playing the video poker at home. Drinking allows you to lose your inhibitions. It also allows you to make some really poor choices. Those in this situation tend to miss important cards and throw away cards they should be keeping. As I said, the mind is not thinking clearly. The more drinks you have, the less your mind will be clear.

The more drinks you put in your system, the more your plans go out the window. Your “set budget” might end up not being so “set.” You might end up putting more money down then you want to. Don’t put yourself in this situation. It’s okay to have a drink or two, but remain sober as much as possible.

5) Get in with the “slot” club. There is a good reason for doing this. You’ll get free comps, and the more the better. You might also get some really cool offers mailed to you. If you have a card, you are officially a member of the club. The management can also keep track of how much you win. They can tell you how much to report to the IRS, especially for winnings upwards of $2,000 or more. They can only do this if you have a card and are part of the club. As soon as you become a member of the casino, join this club. You’ll thank me for it later.

6) Learn how to practice. Practice makes perfect. Video poker is already a game where the odds and money amount is already known, for the most part. Put this to good use. Find your favorite poker games and play. Learn different strategies. This will work in your favor later.

Now let’s discuss some of the things you shouldn’t do during video poker. Some of these might come as a shock to you. Some of you might already be aware of these tips. Either way, takes these suggestions seriously. I might have already discussed some don’ts above, but here are a few more.

1) This one applies for those in physical casinos. Don’t sit down next to a person who is loud. If you find the person is loud and obnoxious, walk away. Try to come back later. If you are playing at home, don’t play near an open conversation. If you have company over and their conversations are loud and distracting, you won’t be able to concentrate. Even with video poker you need to concentrate. If you sense someone is not going to let you play and do your thing, close up shop for the time being. They are not being respectful of what you are doing, nor do they want to be.

Try to find some time later. If you can’t, then go to a friend’s house.

2) Never sit down at a machine that is sticky. If they keys don’t work, find another video poker machine. You need something clean and in working condition. If they keyboard is sticky it’s going to pose a problem. The amounts you bet will be off. The wrong information will be entered. This will not be good for your playing. You’ll be frustrated. You’ll get irritated. You won’t enjoy your at all. This is a game, it’s supposed to be fun. Walk away for now. Another video poker is likely to be open soon.

If you are playing from home and the keys are sticky, ask someone else to use their computer. If you are alone, then go over to the neighbors. Ask them to use theirs. They might find interest in what you are doing. You might get them hooked. Than you two could play together. This is a good way to turn a negative into a positive.

3) Never allow your bank account to get too low. Always have a set amount that you want to keep in your account. Train yourself to not go below that amount, no matter how good the odds are. If your amount is for $500, keep it there. You bank account has to cover you, incase you suffer some losses. Think of it like a normal bank account. You wouldn’t let your bank account go below a certain limit, would you? Same rules apply here.
